The Lyme Regis Christmas Tree Festival 2011
The fifth Lyme Regis Christmas Tree Festival was held in the Lyme Regis Baptist Church from Tuesday 13th to Saturday 17th December. Local organisations decorated a Christmas Tree to reflect their organisation. The Festival was open between 10.30 – 18.00 each day with an extension until 20.00 on Friday (This coincided with the ‘Late Night in Lyme’ shopping events). Saturday opening hours were 10.30 until 14.00. There were 26 decorated trees.

The Lyme Regis Regatta and Carnival Committee are pleased to announce that they have been able to donate £10,200 to 38 local good causes. We believe that this is the largest sum we have been able to donate in any one year.

Chairman of the Regatta and Carnival Committee, Teresa Evemy, said,
“We have had a very successful year organising six events as well as the eighty events during Regatta and Carnival Week. We have been able to respond to requests from local good causes and have been able to include several new ones this year.
We have now been able to donate locally over £60,000 in the last ten years.
My committee and I have worked hard to minimise the costs of our events and have tried to make them accessible to as many people as possible.
Once again we are indebted to local businesses who so have supported us and to the many people from Lyme who have helped us with events and collections. We are already enthusiastically planning next year’s events but sadly our committee numbers are dwindling – there are only six of us left – and we really could do with some help next year. After a successful year the Regatta and Carnival Committee are inviting local good causes to make requests for donations. Interested organisations should detail how they would spend any money donated to them. Requests should be made before November 30th.

Thanks to everyone who helped make this event such a success. We estimate that there was a crowd of over 7000 people watching a great firework display facilitated by Euphoria. Seeing the moon through the firework display over the expanse of Lyme Bay added to the magic of the evening. The bonfire, constructed with the help of the Lyme Regis Town Council Staff, the Football Club, the Harbourmaster and other volunteers, soon blazed away under a cloudless night sky. It was lit by the Mayor of Lyme Regis, Councillor Sally Holman accompanied by the Mayoress and four councillors. It is great to have so much support from our councillors! Thanks to Lyme Regis Pre-School Guy Fawkes sat astride the bonfire (thanks Travis Perkins & View from Lyme for the many pallets delivered to us) – it was a terrific Guy! The bonfire burnt until the small hours and when we arrived to clear it up at 08.00 there were only ashes remaining. Thanks to the Gig Club and other loyal volunteers the beach was cleared by 09.00.
Thank you too, to the thirty collectors (a record number) who collected over £2000 which covered the costs of the evening and to those of you who generously made a donation.
There was a great atmosphere in Lyme Regis on Saturday. People came from many towns and villages within a thirty mile radius. As one visitor said, ” we always come to Lyme for the fireworks and the bonfire on the beach – there is nowhere else like it for the atmosphere and the organisation.” We also met people who had chosen to have a short break staying in Lyme Regis especially because it was bonfire night.

Bonfire night next year will be on Saturday November 3rd 2012 – book the date because it will be another great night in Lyme.
Entries to the week-long spot the window competition were handed in at noon on 12th August.
Lyme Regis shops and businesses added an extra item to their window displays – the fun bit is trying to identify what it was!

Congratulations to the 506 ducks who successfully stayed the course on the River Lym. The winning owner was Sophia (duck 116), 2nd Viv Darling (duck 127), 3rd Joe Loveridge (duck 457) and the last duck home was Finchy-Albiston (duck 501). A special prize was awarded to duck 280 (owned by Ben Trimby.
The final Pavement Art Competition of Lyme Regis Carnival Week took place on Saturday 13th August.
The entries were of a very high standard.
